Advancing Patient Safety Through Education, Innovation & Collaboration
Since 2015, the LEAP Center has improved patient safety and healthcare outcomes through inclusive education, innovation, and collaboration—creating sustainable, long-term impact in the communities we serve.
Our current initiative, focuses on advancing maternal health in underserved communities.
For a decade, the Healthcare Learning and Performance Center has championed patient safety and healthcare equity for all.
We empower organizations to lead lasting change, strengthen capacity, and build sustainable patient programs by co-creating initiatives and solutions that meet the unique needs of the communities we serve.
Our Vision
A world where safe and effective healthcare is available for everyone.
Our Mission
Improve health outcomes in underserved communities by strengthening community capacity, fostering health equity and expanding access to quality, culturally responsive care.
Our work is centered in Miami-Dade county’s most at-risk zip codes, though we aspire to be a model of global change as every day, countless lives are lost due to inadequate access to quality maternal healthcare.
HERE’S THE LOCAL CONTEXT
Limited Access to Prenatal Care:
Less than 50% of mothers in ZIP codes 33142, 33135, and 33127 receive early prenatal care.
Even in higher-access areas like 33130 and 33125, just over 54% of mothers get early prenatal care.
High Poverty Rates Impacting Families:
Up to 24.9% of families in areas like 33127 and 33142 live below the poverty line.
Financial hardship limits access to nutritious food, stable housing, and quality healthcare for mothers and babies.
Educational Barriers for Mothers:
As many as 25.8% of infants in ZIP code 33127 are born to mothers over 18 with less than a high school education.
A mother’s education level directly impacts infant health outcomes and long-term well-being.
HOW WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE
LEADERSHIP TRAINING
We believe in building from within. By identifying and nurturing passionate individuals, we create a network of community leaders who advocate and mentor pregnant women.
We invest in building a strong community around expectant mothers. This includes establishing peer groups to provide emotional support, share knowledge, and address unique challenges.
COMMUNITY CAPACITY BUILDING
COMMUNITY INTERVENTION
We empower communities to dismantle barriers, bridge healthcare gaps, and champion maternal well-being by implementing evidence-based interventions to tackle maternal mortality and morbidity.
HELP MAKE A CHANGE
Empowering communities, fostering awareness, and advocating for change, we strive to dramatically reduce US maternal mortality and morbidity. Our goal: a safer world for mothers and their newborns.
